Nicely written SK and you drew me into the picture because we have lots of hickory’s, shaggy and non, so I’ve seen what you described. More on this later.

My grandparents had two towering trees in the back that provided considerable shade. A sycamore and some type of sweet gum. Any time I hear a bluejay squawk it takes me back to those trees in WVA. Both trees produce rather large seed pods. The sweet gum offspring look like a small mace. You could not walk barefoot out back.
