Spam Update

Just went through a couple hundred spam messages. You know what? I’d be rich and this site would be close to #1 in the world if I just responded to all these wonderful offers.
Except one comment from Joe … which for some reason got buried in there. I dug it out and put it in its proper place but it was not a recent comment.
If a comment goes missing, let me know – it’s not likely I “unapproved” it, especially if you’re a regular commenter.
Y’all have a good day now, ya hear?
More rambles to come …

For supper last night we had fried spam and cheese sandos on mayo slathered toast with lettuce and tomato. Sides were deli deviled egg potato salad and sweet cole slaw. I may have a stripped down spam sando for lunch today.
FWIW, I buy the Great Value (Walmart) brand of spam because the flavor-texture is identical and the cans cost at least a buck less.
Here’s my ramble, actually more of a grumble, for the day.
I live in a rural area, up a dead end road with only four houses on it. We have weekly garbage collection but no other services.
The snow plow comes up occasionally but being a small, hilly, road it is usually last on the list for cleaning. Some amazon delivery vans come once in a while. So “encroachments” near the road are not an issue. There is no one to encroach upon.
The road is lined on one side with some bushes, a few apple trees and box elders. On the side where my property lies, it is lined with pines and buckthorn. I’ve been engaged in a relentless buckthorn remediation battle for years. I’ve ripped out and burned thousands of them to protect the beautiful hardwoods, especially oaks, that they poison and suffocate. The only buckthorns I’ve permitted to grow are the few that line the road. I’ve kept them trimmed and tidy. The trees and bushes on either side give the road a magical feel.
I returned today from a week away and found the little tree lined road to my house is now stripped bare and lined on both sides with only stumps.
Apparently, the county has been chopping down “encroachments”. On my little road we four residents ask for and get no attention. But for some reason the county saw fit to come with their chainsaws to chop down the trees. I know they are entitled to do so. But damn them, they’ve desecrated one of the prettiest roads in the area and violated my space. What a poor use of time, resources and tax dollars. Soo frustrating and infuriating.
I would ask them in writing why they did it. They are entitled to nothing.
There is a right of way that starts from the center of road. I’ll be measuring and following up.
It’s not the best solution but what people commonly do around here is put up a home made sign along the road that says DO NOT CUT. As many as necessary.
We live on a road like you’ve described. We’ve been here 20 years next month. We have intentionally allowed the woods to grow wild along the road, about 20 feet wide, along the whole 400′ of our property along the road.
Massive hardwood trees, huge staunches of shrubberies, deadfall of every kind and even when trees have died and/or fallen I have cut them up and let them lay. It’s a wild life wilderness haven and the reason we moved here.
That 20′ x 400′ swathe of terrain is natural and nature and it’s slammed with every kind of bird and creature and about 50′ further inland is our front porch that we spend a lot of time on.
This swathe also affords us a small level of privacy from the road traffic which is minimal but every passing vehicle is an irritant to me. I REQUIRE my peace of mind and will settle for nothing less.
Unfortunately, for you, the damage has been done and that is mournful.
I have no solution.
When I told my father in law 20 years ago I was moving to the woods to get away from society he said, “Where are you gonna go? No matter where you go they will find you.” In my observation about 80% of the people are unintentional assholes and the other 20% are intentional. I’m getting worse with age…..
Having had employees and such I became familiar with the following sage advice. Assholes–when they quit working everything shuts down.
Thank you for your sympathetic reply.
The trees did afford privacy. They obscured one of the barns. Like you, one of my primary objectives is peace and privacy.
And they were beautiful. Fortunately, it’s still a little early for the birds to be nesting, although I doubt that would have stopped the chain saw gang.
I can get little poplars for $2 each. They grow about 8 feet a year so I’ll plant a row of those instead. I should drive metal stakes in them. That would teach the tree hacking heathens a lesson.
Yes, poplars, or tulipwoods as they’re sometimes called, and sycamores – they all grow fast. Every year we go down into our forest and dig up some 8′ saplings and plant them along the front lot line.
hmmmm….is it possible you “irritated” someone in city government recently? Probably about something entirely different. When i confronted the local city counsel about their refusal to put in playground equipment which the court had ordered them to do the next thing I knew I had to have a “well inspection” on my property 35 miles away! Your situation seems like a spiteful attack from government flunkies!
I dont know anyone in the local government so I dont believe I have irritated anyone, but I’m about to!
