Travel Time
Back home, more or less recovered, more or less caught up. Back to “life” as constitutes “normal” around these parts.
I’ve done this trip enough times to have a route and timing down pretty well. I tend to leave just after dinner and drive through the night – it’s a different world at 3AM than 3PM. I’ll be where I need to be in a day and a half … biscuits and gravy for breakfast day after tomorrow!
I-84 to Echo, UT. Pick up I-80 to Lincoln. Drop down along surface roads to the Missouri River crossing at Nebraska City. I-29 is just east of the river.
Eventually the dawn comes – I find myself on I-29 somewhere south of Nebraska City, somewhat north of St Joe – which is where I get off the expressway and hit US36 east across Missouri.
Take I-29 down to St Joe where I pick up US36 as an alternative to the slightly quicker route down to KC and I-70 to I-64.
It’s just past dawn; I’m driving into the sun. Pull the brim down on my hat and carry on.

36 is a mighty good road, especially compared to I-70. Me likey. I-70 across Missouri is Teh Suck.

Memories of a different time in my life. Drive through Portland at 4 am, Cross the Columbia at Biggs Junction and drive into the sunrise on State Road 14, meeting the westbound UP freight. Load double trailers with corn at Plymouth and head for Harrisburg, Oregon. Then do it again the next day.
I stress when I have to figure out how to get to a new dr office (or other appt) across town.

Definitely a good choice……US-36 across MO,… then US 61 down the MO side to I-64 at Wentsville.?
A good alternate is drop off I-80 at US-183, down to Phillipsburg KS and east on 36
i-70 across MO is the pits
Took 36 to Hannibal and crossed there on I-72. Don’t care to drive anywhere around St Louis.
Wish I would have known that…..you coulda stopped for a meal here in Jacksonville…….
Bevier Loves was my gas stop in MO. Passed through just before O-dark-thirty.
Ah! 29 south through St. Joe. That is where the Kansas City Chiefs have training camp. You passed MCI, then down to 70 to 64 in St. Louis.
70 through Big MO can be a rough ride. I think the road has improved some over time though. Don’t ever stop in East St. Louis for gas….or for anything at all.
70 in KS is OK but I try to avoid KC, StL, and that stretch of highway, Harder when I was in Denver, not a problem now.
70 through Kansas is a LOOOOONG drive!
I’ve been stranded more times on I-70 in Kansas than anywhere else including I-80 in Nebraska/Wyoming and avalanche country in the Rockies and Sierra/Cascades.
