Burr Trail Utah

The New American Digest Posted on November 4, 2026 by IllinoisBeekeeperOctober 31, 2026

submitted by illinoisbeekeeper
pictures taken Oct 2014 EXCEPT the one of the Switchbacks lifted from the internet

We traveled [the Burr Trail] mid-morning to about noon, the drive thru Long Canyon was mostly in shadow and the contrasting light and dark were fantastic

The road is (or was in 2014) fairly well maintained and paved EXCEPT where it crosses a corner of Canyonlands National Park

Gas up in Escalante or Torrey, there's no gas in Boulder.

(also,  from near Boulder, to Escalante, is the Hells Backbone Road....but.......another time)

A few where-is-it reference maps. This is some remote country - at least the road is (relatively) well-travelled if you break down ... but carry survival supplies (water. and some more water. a bit of food; maybe two spares. perhaps a book or two) just in case.

Catching Up

The New American Digest Posted on August 29, 2026 by IllinoisBeekeeperAugust 27, 2026

I see a number of notes to myself marking submissions to be posted or discussed. Jean has a series in the queue, Joe has an article or two he'd like to start a discussion.

I'm going to do the easy ones first.

illinoisbeekeeper sent a couple of photos bracketing a day in the life - Oct 3, 2014 in this example.

Sunrise on I-72, perhaps Pike County, western Ill

Sunset turning west on US36 from US 385; Idalia, Co in distance

Travelling the Colorado Plains: I have see it snow hard and heavy in Denver on or around this date before. Hard to believe "safe" mountain travel may be over in a few weeks. Oh well, I don't have any more road trips planned for the rest of the year.

Though spontaneous combustion of my sanity has been known to occur.

Psalm 118:24

"So Long. See You All a Little Further Down the Road"

When my body won’t hold me anymore
And it finally lets me free
Where will I go?
Will the trade winds take me south through Georgia grain?
Or tropical rain?
Or snow from the heavens?
Will I join with the ocean blue?
Or run into a savior true?
And shake hands laughing
And walk through the night, straight to the light
Holding the love I’ve known in my life
And no hard feelings

The Feral Irishman

Hey, Mr. Tambourine Man,
play a song for me
I'm not sleepy
and there ain't no place I'm goin' to

Hey, Mr. Tambourine Man,
play a song for me
In the jingle jangle morning,
I'll come followin' you

Take me for a trip upon
your magic swirling ship
All my senses have been stripped
And my hands can't feel to grip
And my toes too numb to step
Wait only for my boot heels to be wanderin'

I'm ready to go anywhere,
I'm ready for to fade
Unto my own parade
Cast your dancing spell my way
I promise to go under it

Men who saw night coming down about them could somehow act as if they stood at the edge of dawn.

From Gerard's site. The picture always caught my eye.
