Westbound – The Long Kansas Highway

There’s something … a feeling … that comes over me as I’m on a long trip with the sun sinking down. A full tank of gas, little traffic, a long forever-straight road in front. Not quite hypnotic … relaxing into the hum of tires on asphalt, the low sound of a healthy engine – all systems go, all needles in the green zone.
US36 not far west of Marysville. The Pony Express/Overland Stage/ California-Oregon Trails headed north into Nebraska from here – but I’ve passed the old routes and I’m headed straight west through the center of the country to the far Rocky Mountains near-on 500 miles ahead.
I’ll be in Loveland by dawn …

Looks like you just went past a place in Marysville named Bite Me BBQ.
Hopefully you snagged a bucket of Burnt Ends for the road. https://www.bitemebbqmarysville.com/#/
It’s a bad habit, but when I’m running cross-country, it’s usually gas-and-go. Since I don’t live in Colorado anymore, I’ve not had an opportunity to take 36 until I get to St Joe (84-80-29-36-72-74 … split off in many directions from Indy: 69, 70, 74).
But Mrs DT wants to follow the old wagon route sometime (she’s fond of old B&W 1950s/60s westerns) so when we pass through Marysville, I’ll make it a point to stop by. Good BBQ is hard to pass up.
We’ve been addicted to 50’s b/w westerns for at least 15 years now and watch one almost every evening during supper. Did all 20 years of Gunsmoke and last night Johnny Yuma was front-center. We have 4 DVD players with this stuff in them and rotate each night.
Regular over the air TV has become mostly unwatchable due to the enormous amount of commercials every 8 mins and all of them feature negro’s doing things they’ve never done before in setting the’ve never been in before and medicare/prescription drugs/ambulance chasers and way over expensive vehicles. We used to watch Wheel of Fortune but the new guy is unbearably cucked.
Ghostsniper, You have a way of driving the truth home with a sledge hammer. I for one enjoy. Thanks
Best stretch of road in rural America
Hiawatha KS to Bennett CO on old 36
If I may: “Best stretch of >paved< road in rural America" (though I'm also fond of US50 from Delta, UT to Fallon, NV) 🙂
Don’t come to PA. Land of pot holes, taxes, ten (person) road crews doing the work of two men, questionable election results, yada, yada, yada.
Just got back from PA last nightfor werk. Drove from Philadelphia to Lancaster and back. Long series of winding roads between small towns and only a couple stretches of highway. 35MPH, 45MPH, back to 35MPH, occasionall 55MPH, then back to 35MPH. Beautiful country side but could’t eyeball much of it keeping the car on those crooked roads!
Kansas was home. Several good roads cross the state ….and on across the country. Hwy 50 was it for us east and west in the high school days.
Yep! I’ve driven a good chunk of 50 more than a few times.
Now I’m going to have to take 36 next time I’m out that way, just for the burnt ends if nothing else. Hard to beat US 50 across Nevada. Been watching Perry Mason during supper. They sure smoke a lot, but the cars are worth the watch.
A good overnight is the Sleep Inn in Norton,,,,,,,and a good eatery is the Town and Country Cafe on the east edge of town, N side of 36…not fancy but great food
DT your photo here and the first paragraph compliment quite well, IMHO, with my poem and photos above. Excellent planning.. 🙂
