For the past 25 years, and increasingly, the internet has been the “neighborhood platform” that has given every every squeaky wheel a megaphone. Like in the old days trying to listen to the radio when the station was a little bit off – a lot of background static. As the song “House of the Rising Sun” does a 2 step with the static undulating louder and louder eventually you tire and go do something else. It’s that switch on the side of the box – push it and life instantly goes back to normal.

I’m not sure if it’s me or them but I have been increasingly spending less time online and more time in meatspace. Things are inverting for me. It used to be that I found the web entertaining, an escape pod from reality, but any more it seems like the opposite is true. Have I been conned? I think so.

Do I really need to know about stuff on the other side of the world in record breaking time? How does that benefit me? Everything that stimulates one of my senses detracts me from something else, something more meaningful.

While the matrix still has some utility, too much of a good thing might be bad. It’s not the be all end all. Today the sun will rise 1 minute later than yesterday and set 1 minute earlier too so the idea of making hay while the sun is shining looms large.

As the summer runs out and the winter approaches a lot of stuff must get done out here in the hinters. Distractions, especially the nonessential kind, must be couched allowing things to get done.

I still have not scrubbed the winter off our vehicles but that chore will be accomplished over the weekend and today will see a brand new toilet installed in our downstairs bathroom.

I am also going to try to wear out our gas grill with an assortment of epicurean delights. Tonight’s meal, in part, is currently swimming in a plastic bag of oils and herbs and spices and just a week or 2 ago was strutting around in a barnyard somewhere.

Stuff doesn’t get done unless you do it.

A man’s work is never done. I have been mentally tallying all the house projects that need completed once I retire. Replace some windows. Paint the north side of the house. Remove remaining carpet in the house and install flooring. Sight in a few more rifles that I have acquired, with supporting hand loads. Polish all the aluminum on the ’82 Sportster and replace a few gaskets…….
