It’s Often My Own Fault
because I’m the one to bring up such topics – I’m weak, I know …
but the comments – including my own – on New Neo’s “Open thread 3/25/2025” post is what I’d like to avoid here. Not that I’m knocking Neo’s site – it’s a daily read and it’s the comments I’m speaking of – but why duplicate what so many other blog sites are doing?
“Trump’s a Nazi!” “No he’s not!” “Yes he is” “Prove it” … blah, blah, blah
She’s a saint – or demon – for putting up with what she deals with in the comments world.
No one’s going to change anyone’s mind and it just pisses people off – one side or the other. If you’re here, you should already have a flavor of my political leanings … and I suspect many of you lean that way as well though I’m not going to stop (too many) alternate viewpoints.
I’m already a mean, nasty SOB; I try to avoid it here – I’d just get riled up and it does me no good … nor you.
I agree, DT…..the internet is full of arguementative-ness (did I just make up a new word?) rather than arguments. You don’t have to be disagreeable to have a disagreement.
I have recently become a fan of long-form podcasts, and one of my favorites is Mark Halperin’s 2Way. I usually listen to his Morning Meeting on my walks in the morning and about half the time I get to his evening show. He has recently added Megan McCain on Mondays and Wednesdays (I reflexively didn’t like her because she’s been a Never-Trumper and I hated her dad), but on listening to her, I do share some agreements. Halperin’s motto is “Peace, love and understanding”, and I agree. His 2Way is a place where I can actually listen to the other side without the name-calling so often found elsewhere.

If a comment section is moderated it can maintain civility because there will always be those people that try to assert their views over others – perhaps they are narcissists like Ann claims.
Continuing that quote; “Until it’s time to be ‘not nice'” at the discretion of the owner.

Somehow Gerard kept all the trolls at bay. We’ve all seen them on other sites, they never shut up, always have something to say in every post as if they are the smartest and we are so fortunate as to be the unwilling and undeserving recipients of their unreproachable wisdom. Most sites have one or two.
I think it was because he didn’t suffer fools, he told them off and got rid of them. Yeah, he was like Dalton, “Just be nice. Be nice. Until it’s time to not be nice.”
Of all the sites I haunt, only American Digest was troll free. It’s also been one of the longest I have read, all the others I drift away because of the awful trolls, I get sick to death of their spew. And/or sometimes the host(s) and I diverge.
