Mrs DT’s Snapdragons
Mrs DT disappears every so often for a few months at a time. On one of those occasions, she tasked me with keeping the weeds under control.
We have a crushed rock front ground covering so figuring anything green in there was by definition, a “weed”, I “kept it under control”.
Poor ignorant me. It was green, I pulled it, … and wiped out all her snapdragons.
“Except those!” didn’t work well, especially after the fact. It was green stuff, it got picked.
I can appreciate gardens and the work that goes in to them but I don’t have any desire to participate in the activities that surround such interests.
This year I didn’t pick the green stuff and the snapdragons appear to have thrived quite well on my lack of interest.

Crazy name for such a beautiful little flower.
My wife plants flowers, lots of them, all over the place. Every single day, from 7am til 9am she is out in the yard dealing with them. Watering, feeding, weeding, etc. And all the bird feeders. She isn’t fit to be around if the weather doesn’t permit her to do that.
Snapdragons? I have no idea. I can’t keep up with all of it, and don’t have much interest, but I do enjoy seeing them everwhere.
That is, until the deer and other creatures get them, and this year they have been rapacious.
Have you heard of a flower called a Pink Lady? It’s kind of like a lily but it is real tall, maybe 2 feet and no leaves on the stalk. Well some how one of them started growing right out in the middle of the yard a few years ago and no one planted it there. How’d it get there? The wind? A bird, an airplane? NO! Superman!!! It currently has 1 bloom and about 4 getting ready to bloom any day. But, every time it shows up, in short order, a creature bites the top off. And then has the unmitigated gall to let the head lay there on the ground – like it’s biting it off for spite!!! The very nerve!
I don’t know if it’s been because the lack of rain this year or what but the animals have been eating everything. They have even eaten the light purple flowers on the top of the stalks that come out of the tops of the Hosta’s and I’ve never seen that happen before.

Many years ago we lived in NH. I had three small children to tend and my husband tended his garden. Being a commercial Pilot he was often gone for
days at a time. Once, before he left on a trip he complained about the weeds choking his Raspberries. Wanting to surprise him on his return, I went to the garden and pulled all the weeds around the Raspberries. Being in the spirit of pest removal, I noticed a giant weed big as a small hose that made its way around the whole garden and feeling super helpful, I pulled every bit of it out… No home-grown Pumpkins that year.
Re: Snapdragons. Last year DH brought home one little Snapdragon plant from the Orange Store. Plnated it in medium sized pot and it grew and grew and grew. It was the most beautiful rich ruby red. It was still blooming when we closed down the garden for winter, so we brought it in the house. She lived on into mid October. That was the one and only ever snapdragon in our garden. Early this spring clinging to a stone in the garden path about 10 or 12 feet away was a small snapdragon. Feeling sentimental about her parentage DH carefully pulled her off the rock she was clinging to and replanted her in one of the planters. She has grown well this summer and is providing coppery colored flowers–go figure!
