DST
“Only a white man could cut a foot off one end of a blanket, add it to the other, and call it a longer blanket“
Patty Murray, D-WA: “Every year, more Americans grow more frustrated setting their clocks back and forth, and every winter folks in Washington state despair at the prospect of losing an hour of precious sunlight when we are forced off Daylight Saving Time“
You despair? What hour of sunlight did you lose? Where did it go?
And you’re not on DST in winter when the days are shorter.
But this isn’t commentary of one party vs another – both parties make ridiculous statements about the subject.
Follow the money – who gains by not stopping the change of time twice a year?
Myself? Geographically, we should be on Pacific Time instead of Mountain Time (which extends well into Oregon). I’m more or less due north of San Diego. I suspect the Mormon influence, especially in the eastern part of the state, wants to keep the same time as Salt Lake City.
I’d actually prefer to stay on standard time but either way, I’d prefer we didn’t change time twice a year.
But I guess congress would rather spend time on this issue than something important …

I’m with ya, DT. Pick one, or the other, and quit this infernal jumping back and forth.
It was 1987 and I was in my last year in the Air Force. I was working in our Long Range Planning office where I was coordinating with our airlift users (Army, Air Force and Marines) on their needs as much as a year in the future.
And South Korea was due to host the Summer Olympics in September of 1988. As part of their Olympics planning, they were instituting a Daylight Savings change to their clocks to make the TV broadcasts line up better with an American TV viewer. They were trying this out a year before the Olympics.
I would often speak with South Koreans about us showing up somewhere on a certain day and time, and inevitably, they would ask me to explain how this Daylight Savings nonsense worked. For as long as they had had clocks, they were set to the same time zone. Now, they were shifting back and forth depending on the time of year, or something, and completely puzzled by it.
I was never able to give them a satisfactory answer.
