Getting Closer

The New American Digest Posted on July 8, 2025 by DTJuly 8, 2025

with less time to "prepare" - whatever that means.

In candid interviews with over two dozen House Democrats, Axios found a theme of anger, despair, and a dangerous appetite for chaos.

"Democrats told to "get shot" for the anti-Trump resistance" (axios dot com 7/7/25)

“Our own base is telling us that what we're doing is not good enough ... [that] there needs to be blood to grab the attention of the press and the public,” one lawmaker revealed, describing discussions with furious progressives. Another added that constituents have urged them to prepare for “violence ... to fight to protect our democracy.”

It's not just radicals from the streets

Rep. Brad Schneider (D-IL), chair of the New Democrat Coalition, acknowledged the heat from his base: “We've got people who are desperately wanting us to do something ... no matter what we say, they want [more].” More means more radical; heckling Trump, rogue impeachment stunts, even getting arrested or tackled during protests. One Democrat recalled people suggesting they should be “willing to get shot” while visiting ICE facilities.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D, Mass.) “Elon Musk is seizing the power that belongs to the American people.”
Rep. Jamie Raskin (D, Md.) Musk and Trump were conducting a “rapidly expanding and accelerating coup.”
Sen. Ron Wyden (D., Ore.)  declared that a “coup” was being carried out.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D., N.Y.) Musk was “taking away everything we have.”
Rep. Maxine Waters (D., Cal.) We are here to fight back.”
Sen. Cory Booker (D., NJ) called on citizens to “fight”; “We will rise up.”
Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D., TX) “We are gonna be in your face, we are gonna be on your a–es, and we are going to make sure you understand what democracy looks like, and this ain’t it.”
Rep. LaMonica McIver (D., N.J.): “God d—it shut down the Senate!…WE ARE AT WAR!”
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, (D-N.Y.) called for Democrats to fight  “in the streets.”

I don't believe I'll be attending too many large events this year - large events being anything with people I don't know or Democrats.
I don't even want to take my yearly trip back east because there are some large cities I can't easily avoid.
I was in Detroit in '67 .... once is enough.

Tunes For Tuesday – Artemas “I Like The Way You Kiss Me”

The New American Digest Posted on July 8, 2025 by DTJuly 4, 2025

A sample of some obscure – and some maybe not obscure – tunes from my strange and off-the-wall collection.

Today’s selection: Artemas "I Like The Way You Kiss Me" 2024

Not everything I have is from the 20th century ... I'm with it - I even have a "smart" phone ... (I think I can find it).

Not so obscure, the tune was written by Artemas Diamandis, an Englishman with a Greek name and hit the Top 10 in Europe and Top 20 in the US. I forget where I first heard it.

The associated video is not to my taste but I like the tune.

"So Long. See You All a Little Further Down the Road"

When my body won’t hold me anymore
And it finally lets me free
Where will I go?
Will the trade winds take me south through Georgia grain?
Or tropical rain?
Or snow from the heavens?
Will I join with the ocean blue?
Or run into a savior true?
And shake hands laughing
And walk through the night, straight to the light
Holding the love I’ve known in my life
And no hard feelings

Hey, Mr. Tambourine Man,
play a song for me
I'm not sleepy
and there ain't no place I'm goin' to

Hey, Mr. Tambourine Man,
play a song for me
In the jingle jangle morning,
I'll come followin' you

Take me for a trip upon
your magic swirling ship
All my senses have been stripped
And my hands can't feel to grip
And my toes too numb to step
Wait only for my boot heels to be wanderin'

I'm ready to go anywhere,
I'm ready for to fade
Unto my own parade
Cast your dancing spell my way
I promise to go under it

Men who saw night coming down about them could somehow act as if they stood at the edge of dawn.
