Burrowing Owl, a protected species in southwest FL.
At our FL house my wife had a small pond similar to the one she has now and it was very nice. A mated pair of Burrowing Owls decided to frequent that pond. They’d show up in the morning and pretty much stay all day and this went on for months.

The female started acting poorly and one day we found her dead next to the pond. The male was close by. We buried he in the vacant lot next to our house. The male continued to stand sentinel at the pond, unmoving, as if in wait for her to return. A week or so later we found him dead where his mate had died. Til death do us part…they really meant it…..
