The older I get the more I realize what I am able to endure. This goes for all of us. I am not saying that all of us could pass SEAL Team 6 training, but most of us on this blog are no longer young and suspect that if we reflect much, we can see that we have passed some difficult life tests, even if we simply came out still breathing. Divorce (2x) and financial challenges that go along with it, passed over for promotion, health scares, etc. I am still running the race.

Recently I went bear hunting on Blue Mountain near Colorado Springs. A generous business associate invited me to hunt on 400 acres of property he had access to. One of those days he pointed out from his cabin some mountain ridges, peaks, etc. and suggested I take such path, work my way to a saddle then drop down the back side of the mountain, then find the road and wait for pick up. It was going to be a 5+ hour trek. I took my nomral gear with backpack, extra shirt and flashlight in case I had to spend the night, two quarts of water and a small sleeve of peanuts. I don’t want to make this story too long, but in short, I ate nothing other that day except the peanuts, make the trek with frequent compass checks, dropped off the back of the mountain with a few falls (bruised palm and scrapes) then made it to me rendezvous. I have never been on this mountain prior. Very limited cell phone coverage. I ate plenty later at camp dinner.

This was a self-imposed man test. Why? I do not know. We can endure more than we think.

Why? Why indeed. Why not?

You have a way with words, Snakepit. There is much in your imagery that made me recall, with much pleasure, similar adventures of my own. Thank you.

I would say that you passed the man test before you ever hit the trail by preparing yourself for the potential eventuality of having to unexpectedly spend a night in the wilderness.

There is another way to look at it, as Gerard previously had posted in his sidebar:

“This is the day which the Lord hath made, let us rejoice and be glad in it”

Psalm 118:24

Well undoubtedly the above is not necessarily easy to do, each day is truly a blessing, whether we realize it or not.

That has been my first prayer of the morning, from as far back as I can remember
