I once worked with a guy who was so into trains that he bought himself an old passenger car (40’s? 50’s? 60’s? I forget). He took a couple of years to rebuild/refurbish the thing. When he finished the work, he’d call up the train company to tell them that he’d like his car picked up at a particular station and then dropped off somewhere down the line. This was how he vacationed.

To each, his own.

Full details aren’t out yet but it looks like it will pass through Ft Wayne in one direction and Muncie-Tipton-Frankfort on the return. Philly for July 4th.

I got to see that contraption pass thru the small town of Hersey, Nebraska a few years ago, just west of North Platte. Some of you will recall that Gerard did a posting once about how the good people of North Platte met every single troop train during WWII and had recently reprised that on short notice for the current generation of troops passing through by train. Anyway, it was glorious to see. My uncle was an operating engineer on Wabash Railroad, back in the days of steam, and I wish I’d been old enough and smart enough to ask him about all that before he passed. There were still a few steam locomotives still in everyday use when I was quite small, but I wasn’t big enough to really remember anything about them before they disappeared, nearly for good, and I’m very proud of UP for continuing to run a few once in a while.

Ten and a half hours to Elko. It’s tempting.

My choices (on main highways) are Wells, Elko, and Winnemucca – all around 4 hours. I had never checked before but it looks like Wells is quicker than Winnemucca (that surprised me) but only 15 minutes or so difference. Went to (west of) Winnemucca last time. Have to check to see whether it’s following SP or WP tracks. I’d want to stay away from I-80 and the resulting traffic.

Interesting in the video that they managed to find that many cars without graffiti.
I was about 8 years old when Dad – a railroader – took me into the cab of a steam engine with the engineer and coal-minder. They opened the door to the firebox to shovel in the next load right in front of me ….living Hell burning in there and I remember the view today. Not sure an 8-year old could get close to that scene again.
