An uncle in WVA passed this last Sunday. It was rather sudden. I was advised on Monday morning that his service was the next day. Uncle Mick and I were quite close. Hunting together, shooting, reloading, treks in the woods, horseback riding. I was not going to miss his service. Told my wife to pack a bag and get in the car. She helped drive. 938 miles and 14.5 hours to Dunbar WVA where we got a cheap hotel. 35 to 70 to 64, you don’t even need a map. We made the service the next morning seeing family. The US Navy Honor Guard did a nice job for the former Sea Bee. Taps will jerk a tear out of a guy. The flag used was the one also used at his father’s burial. My grandfather was a WWll veteran serving in Europe. My uncle knew he was dying and still thought enough to will me one of his hunting rifles. Henry lever .44. I will cherish it. I had brought along a Colt 1911 .45acp magazine with me, full of my handloads to drop in his casket. None of us get out of this alive and I just hit the 4th quarter myself, turning 60 this year. Many of my 1st cousins were there and some of them have grown children themselves. I am now one of those older relatives I remember seeing at grandma’s house when I was a kid.

The drive back. Shortly after the service we got lunch with some family then my good wife and I started the drive back. Headed west about 300 miles and stayed in Evanston IN which is a short jaunt south of 64. Beautiful area of open farm land and shocks of thick woods. Deer all over the place. Yes, I was thinking of Ghost. Even said a prayer for him. Bet he wasn’t much more than an hour north of me.

Rolled into Wichita about 5PM yesterday and stopped at Sam’s to get a beef roast for today. Our crew of four, Mom and a family friend will celebrate Thanksgiving together.

Happy Thanks giving.

I’m very sorry to hear of your loss. Your story spurs me to be a better uncle.
Don’t let that Henry be a safe queen.

The very same to you, DT. Thank you for your most appreciated effort in keeping
American Digest and its creator alive in our minds. Not that your own and others’ very interesting essays are not appreciated also.

And to all who visit here, a Happy Thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving. May America wake up to our Blessings. May America turn back to our Heavenly Father. May it begin now.

America’s early Pilgrims set aside certain days to offer Thanks, Prayer and Fasting to our Heavenly Father for the Blessings and opportunities afforded them. In 1789, at the request of Congress President George Washington declared Thursday, November 26, 1789, “as a day of public thanksgiving and prayer, to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favours of Almighty God”, calling on Americans to “unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech him to pardon our national and other transgressions,” and to “be devoted by the People of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being, who is the beneficent Author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be.”

In March 1798, President John Adams wrote:

“I recommend that on the said day the duties of humiliation and prayer be accompanied by fervent thanksgiving to the Bestower of Every Good Gift, not only for His having hitherto protected and preserved the people of these United States in the independent enjoyment of their religious and civil freedom, but also for having prospered them in a wonderful progress of population, and for conferring on them many and great favors conducive to the happiness and prosperity of a nation.” –

Sometimes we forget how much we have to be thankful for. My dear wife fixed a turkey using Cowboy Kent Rollins recipe. It was delicious! Had dinner with my brothers, one sister-in-law, my first cousin, oldest son and wife, youngest son and our sort of adopted son. Just a relaxing rainy Oregon day. Now taking a break with my old Kentucky friend Evan Williams.

Ours was in Andale, KS, apparently not far from Snakepit…in the church hall with about 100 relatives.

I had forgotten but my wife reminded me. This was our SECOND Thanksgiving this year.

Last year we had none. We both became very ill about a week before Tday and stayed that way for about 2 months. It’s very unusual for either of us to get sick and never before had both us been sick at the same time, nor to such severity.

Last Jan we were feeling better but decided to save the bird til our 41st anniversary on 18 Feb, so that’s what we did.

Prior to 7 years ago, so for 34 years in a row, we always had Thanksgiving at my wifes parents house with lots of her fambly there. Her father died in 2008 and then her mother 7 years ago. Since then it has been just her and me except 2 times when our son and his fambly came up from Florida.

But that’s not true neither.
Our first year after we got married my wifes parents had not yet moved to FL. So our first Thanksgiving together, and she was with child, we did at a restaurant named Village Inn, sort of like a Perkins or Applebee’s.

That was a long time ago, and the Village Inn has changed to a shoe store named Just Kicks. That’s kinda disappointing.
