Yep. I came back from my morning walk and got right in to my morning ritual: Kiss the lovely Mrs. azlib (who sleeps in later than I), start a cup of coffee, then look at the markets to see how my nest egg is doing. “What? Why won’t my portfolio refresh from yesterday’s close? Why aren’t the prices moving?”
And after a moment or two, it dawned on me: Today is Juneteenth. That most unnecessary “holiday” right in the middle of the fakest of the fake celebration months (Pride Month).
I’ve got a long list of Things-That-I-Can-Do-Without, and while Juneteenth and Pride Month aren’t at the top of my list, they are on the list, and we’d be better off without them.

Some random thoughts on US becoming involved in bombing Iran…..
In preface, I believe that Iran deserves everything that they’re getting, and that they need to be prevented from having nuclear and ballistic weapons. For decades, they have made no secret of their aims, and as they near the point of producing nuclear weapons, this needs to be stopped. Yesterday, I watched a great Preston Stewart interview with an IDF spokesman. Buried in the interview is a great point that I hadn’t considered: Discounting the whole nuclear issue, Iran is on the precipice of producing not just tens or dozens of ballistic missiles per year, but thousands. This alone is a threat to Israel, the Middle East, and beyond.
And for as much good as Israel has done in the past week, getting those Iranian centrifuges, buried as they are under an Iranian mountain, might be beyond their capability to bomb. Enter American involvement with the B-2 dropping a MOP bomb.
Here, I’ll stop and remind myself that I have my 60% Rule, where 60% of what I consume on the internet is either biased, slanted, incomplete, twisted, wrong, or a flat-out lie. I’ll also note that the world (not to mention, the internet) is full of kooks who lock onto one small detail and cannot see the forest for the trees.
That said, I watched another video (which I wish I could go back and find….sorry) this morning questioning whether the MOP bomb, or even a series of MOP bombs will be effective. These guys appeared to be of the Tucker-Carlson-No-Wars-Ever clan, but they may have had this point: The design of that Iranian bunker holding those centrifuges might not be that easy to destroy. The entrances to these bunkers are certainly not vertical. They’re set at an angle. Moreover, these bunkers are relatively easy to protect by placing a diamond-shaped re-inforced section at their entrances. The simple deflection of the MOP from an off-vertical delivery will reduce the effectiveness of the weapon. You only have to look a tank’s armor to see this.
In short, “Should we bomb Iran’s nuclear weapons capability?” is a different question from “Can we bomb Iran’s nuclear weapons capability?”. And if we’re not sure that we can, then should we be involved at all?
Yesterday, I was at about 90%/10% that we will launch those B-2s. Today, I’m down to 50%/50%.
Remember the justification for invading Iraq, by the feckless Bush, to take out Saddam’s weapons of mass destruction, which turned out to be a chimera, a will o’ the wisp? We broke it, and we paid dearly for it in blood and treasure. Those intel community folks were wrong, wrong, wrong.
Why should anybody believe them now? T acts like he’s convinced. Is he that, or snookered, or a fool who wants to believe? If I was King of the USA, I’d fire every single person in the intel community for gross incompetence and malfeasance, and start over with a whole new crowd.
I’m an originalist. T ought to call up the Congress and bring all the evidence, good and bad, and let’s see if those jokers have the guts to declare war the old-fashioned way. Let the debates happen beforehand, and let Mr. and Mrs. America see the evidence before they invest their sons and treasure.
Mmmyeah, I’ve sometimes thought about how we went into Iraq too…..What would I do if I could roll back the clock to 2003? Of course, if I did that, I’d have to eliminate all the knowledge that we have gained since then. At the time, we bought in to the whole “weapons of mass destruction” thingi because Saddam himself had so convincingly told that story (mainly because he wanted the Iranians to believe it). In 2002, Bush sent Joe Wilson (Valerie Plame’s husband) to see if Saddam had attempted to acquire yellowcake. Wilson came back and said that he hadn’t found evidence of that (which isn’t exactly a denial of the claim). However, he also wrote a 2003 NYT OpEd which ended with this….
…I was convinced before the war that the threat of weapons of mass destruction in the hands of Saddam Hussein required a vigorous and sustained international response to disarm him. Iraq possessed and had used chemical weapons; it had an active biological weapons program and quite possibly a nuclear research program—all of which were in violation of United Nations resolutions. Having encountered Mr. Hussein and his thugs in the run-up to the Persian Gulf war of 1991, I was only too aware of the dangers he posed. But were these dangers the same ones the administration told us about? We have to find out. America’s foreign policy depends on the sanctity of its information. For this reason, questioning the selective use of intelligence to justify the war in Iraq is neither idle sniping nor “revisionist history”, as Mr. Bush has suggested. The act of war is the last option of a democracy, taken when there is a grave threat to our national security. More than 200 American soldiers have lost their lives in Iraq already. We have a duty to ensure that their sacrifice came for the right reasons.
So which is it? If intelligence and research cannot be 100% certain, then how is one to decide?
Should we have gone into Iraq? Like almost every American back then, I was a supporter of the decision, but today, on retrospect, with the clear lens of 20/20 hindsight, I’m less convinced. But today, I have to recognize that despite whatever I may have learned from our Iraq experience, I still do not have 20/20 foresight.
Is the intelligence community “incompetent” or do they call balls and strikes the best that they can, knowing that sometimes they’ll be wrong? A case can be made for both viewpoints. And with Trump, especially, we cannot dismiss that large swathes of the intelligence community have been out to get him….call that the Chuck Schumer Rule.
Tangentially, I think that the American public’s reluctance to use our military, and the ambigious nature of our intelligence, has lead our opponents/adversaries to believe that they can get away with more than they ought to.
I too would like Trump to present an old-fashioned presentation of all the facts as we know them and then have Congress, as representatives of the American people, vote on whether we should engage in hostilities (as Congress did in 2002). But those days are done. That’s not going to happen any more. The President will weigh the facts as we know them, the military’s plans, and the public’s views on the matter, and decide the question alone.
“Is the intelligence community “incompetent” or do they call balls and strikes the best that they can”
Or perhaps they are competent in what they do … and this is what they’re doing.
Just an alternative option.
I just don’t understand how any sane person today can place any credence in the most criminal enterprise to ever exist in human history – the us gov’t.
None of them act on my behalf and if push comes to shove my allegiance will be elsewhere.
Iran says Death to America. I will take that at face value. They have supported all sorts of terrorists that HAVE killed and maimed many Americans. If we think they will not hurt us when they can, then we have not been paying attention. They are clearly working on having nukes.
Yeah… Death To America is our self-imposed contract with Israel. They own the US and Netanyahu is the architect of all of our “diplomacy.” The list of aggression against the US is long and evil. The attack on the USS Liberty in 1967 was deliberate to draw us in a false flag in order to join in their war. That’s always the story with these freaks. As long as we pay unquestioning allegiance to Israel then Iran will chant that old saying. The Epstein caper is a Mossad operation that has almost every politician blackmailed with the video evidence. Trump’s daughter married Jewish Jared and all of his grandkids are of The Tribe. Trump himself took the vows in 2022 with the funny little skull cap while stroking their wall. How many US politicos hold dual citizenship with Israel? Bibi wants Gaza cleaned of the last Palestinian and we’re financing that genocide. You’re worried about Iran? Get a grip. Quit watching TV, owned by the Jews and telling you what to think.
With each passing generation the lessons of war are lessened to such time nothing was learned at all. Such a time might be now and for them there is woe.

Donald Jeffries wrote a splendid dissertation suggesting the US, Israel, and everyone leave Iran the hell alone. They ain’t bothering nobody, me least of all. https://donaldjeffries.substack.com/p/trump-israel-and-the-death-of-maga
Read it. That’s pretty much how I have believed all along. Trump better get his eyes back on the prize.
We’ve had a lot of rain lately and the grass in our yard is tall. I’ll mow it down this weekend rather than concern myself with the neighbors yard.
Somebody should remind Trump about his own yard.

And here’s 5 minutes of reflection brought to you by Judge Andrew Napolitano regarding the gravity of yet another war…
