That might have been the same route the 1st Colorado Infantry used on their forced march from Denver to Glorieta Pass. They probably just upgraded the 1860’s wagon road to make it the first highway.

I’ve taken the Southwest Chief over Glorieta Pass twice to Raton. Never made it to Trinidad. All that part of the country is far from the bright lights big city. Except for the Interstates and the railroad and the homesteaders in the hills, the land out there seems remarkably natural.
